Each piece is written from the edges, from the eyes of an outsider peering in, questioning, and aching to understand. It is an attempt to be a bridge to my mother's world.

Don't let him see
Don't let him hear
Hide your heartbeat my baby
Harden your breath
Close your eyes
I'll be by your side.

Mandibles in Veins

How did it feel
When they took your flesh bit by bit?

Were your thoughts eaten bit by bit?
As the buzzing swallowed your voice whole?

Are they crawling beneath your skin?
Do their claws fall through your muscles?
Have they hooked their mandibles in your veins?

Was your blood warm enough to make their home in your ribs?
Or did they heat you enough to melt your cold bones?

Golden, red, yellow, black,
I see what you saw.

You lay there, hollowed just like me.
But you are full now,
While I am still open. Still gaping.

The Tree That Took

She’s here.
For her.

She gives, but never to me.

She takes everything for her.

To her, she gives.
But not to me.

I, who stand desolate,
watching her discard.

She gives
and gives
and gives
and gives.

And now,
she must give to me.
